Five things Catholics should know November 19, 2012

1.    By 2022 the ratio of wage-earning to retired religiousis projected to be 1:4. The average social Security benefit for a religious isapproximately $4,800-- roughly 1/3 the amount received by the average beneficiary in the United States.

2.   Pope Benedict XVI is pushing Latin and established a pontifical academy for Latin studies Nov. 10. Maybe he wants to help high schoolers with their verbal SATs.

3.   Sequestration, the huge budget cuts slated for January, could drastically hurt the poor. The central moral measure of any budget proposalis how it affects the least of these (Matthew 25:31-46). Needs of the hungry and homeless without work or in poverty should come first.

4. With the elections, Catholic presence on Capitol Hill has increased, according to a Pew analysis. Pew: “The number of Catholics in the 113th Congress has risen to 161 (as ofNov. 16), up from 156 in the previously elected body. If Protestants are not counted together but as separate denominations, then Catholics are the largest religious group in the 113th Congress. They represent more than 30% of the members in the 113th, compared with 29% in the previous Congress. About a fifth of the U.S. adult population (22%) is Catholic.”

5.  God loves you.

An interesting list, Sister MaryAnn. I am most heartened by #5, which is of course, #1. Which I know that you know.

My own bishop, Howard J. Hubbard, wrote an excellent editorial on wage justice in
today's Albany Times Union. You would well know Bishop Hubbard's tireless work on behalf of the poor.

I grow so weary of hearing about how the poor take advantage of things. I also grow weary of hearing about the strain upon businesses regarding wages and health care... Trust me, I don't want to see businesses fail, but I have to wonder about the widow's mite portion of it. That is the one where we give out of our need and not simply our surplus. It seems that many do not want to give out from the surplus.

I often wish that some of these folks could come sit with me for a day or two, as I man the desk at a parish. People need so much help, so much help. Of every kind - and it all starts with love and mercy.

Sorry, rant over. I just feel so ill at ease these days, trying to keep the faith.

" Pope Benedict XVI is pushing Latin and established a pontifical academy for Latin studies Nov. 10. Maybe he wants to help high schoolers with their verbal SATs."

Maybe he wants to foster our Catholic identity and follow the Council's call for Latin to be preserved as the language of the Roman rite and continued usage in our Mass.

" Sequestration, the huge budget cuts slated for January, could drastically hurt the poor. The central moral measure of any budget proposalis how it affects the least of these (Matthew 25:31-46). Needs of the hungry and homeless without work or in poverty should come first."

Stealing from the wealthy to pay for those who will not work is a sin in itself.

2 Thessalonians 3:10

With the elections, Catholic presence on Capitol Hill has increased, according to a Pew analysis.

Does this number reflect Catholics who respect and obey Church teaching, or those who simply call themselves Catholic?

Thank you Sr. Mary Ann. I have a couple of questions:
1)Why was #4 the only comment posted on facebook? (or did I miss something?)

2) Does anyone follow the comments section on facebook? I ask this because some of the comments are not very Christian.

Pax Christi,
Stephanie

Interesting that "God loves you" doesn't show up until #5 on this blog.....I would have expected it to be #1.
